Renewing a French residence permit: when to apply and how long to wait
Updated 19 October 2026
The filing window
For most permits requested online on ANEF, the renewal must be filed between the 120th and the 60th day before your current permit expires, roughly four to two months before. Some permits outside the online service follow a two-month rule. Check the rule for your permit on ANEF or with your prefecture.
Tip: file as soon as the window opens, to keep room if documents are requested.
What if I file too late?
A late application can be treated as a first application, sometimes with different conditions, and a €180 regularisation fee may apply unless there is force majeure. You may also not receive an extension certificate, leaving you without proof of lawful residence when your card expires.
While you wait: the extension certificate
If your complete file was filed on time and the prefecture has not decided when your card expires, you should receive an extension certificate, valid for up to three months and renewed until the decision. For a renewal it lets you work if your permit allows it. See our guide on the extension certificate.
How long does a renewal take?
It depends heavily on the prefecture. Each prefecture page on Dossiermap shows application → decision and application → card collection once enough cases are shared. In the form, choose “Residence permit, renewal” so your dates count in the right place.
