The French extension certificate (attestation de prolongation d'instruction) explained
Updated 19 October 2026
When you apply for or renew a residence permit on ANEF, you may receive three different documents. They do not have the same value.
The three ANEF certificates
| Document | When | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Filing certificate (attestation de dépôt) | Right after filing online | Only that you applied. It does not prove lawful residence. |
| Extension certificate (attestation de prolongation d’instruction) | If the complete file was filed on time and is still pending | Lawful residence while your file is examined. |
| Favourable decision certificate | After a positive decision, until the card is ready | Lawful residence until the card is collected. |
Validity
The extension certificate is valid for up to three months and is renewed by the prefecture as long as no decision has been made. Keep an eye on your ANEF account near the end date.
Can I work with it?
- Filing certificate: no.
- Extension certificate for a renewal: yes, if the permit you are renewing allows work.
- Certificate for a first application: only for some permits (listed on Service-Public).
Can I travel?
Rules differ between first applications and renewals. Before travelling outside the Schengen area, check the official list of documents that allow you to return to France: a certificate for a first application in particular may not be enough.
I haven’t received a certificate
This is a frequent problem reported on Services Publics+. Check that your file is complete and was filed within the window, then use the ANEF or prefecture contact form. If it lasts, associations and specialised lawyers can help: administrative courts have ordered prefectures to issue these certificates.
